The eyes are one of the most important parts of your body.  They are an important organ with easy access from the outside which makes them both delicate and vulnerable.  We use our eyes each and every day, even while we sleep.   So what are some things we can do to protect the eyes.

Artificial Lighting:
Neon lights are hard on the eyes and can affect your eyesight.  It’s much better to use full spectrum lamps or light bulbs.

Televisions and Computers:
Because the distance and the angle never changes, your eyes become stagnant because you are forced to stare at the screens.  Look away from the screen and around the room often.  During commercials, glance at something closer to you and then far away so that you are changing up the distance.  Try to limit what and how long you watch something.  If you start becoming irritated or frustrated with what you are watching, walk away from it because your eyes are now starting to strain.

Dim Lights:
As early as childhood we are always told to turn the light on when reading because you will hurt your eyes.  This is actually false information and you can see pretty well in dim light if your eyes are relaxed.  Although they may strain at first, with time they will adjust and relax on their own.

Fine or Small Print:
Once you learn how to relax your eyes, reading fine or small print will no longer be a problem.  Through relaxation exercises, your eyesight will become much stronger and accurate.

Burst of Bright Light:
Staring into bright or strong lights, such as the sun, can damage your eyesight for a short time or permanently.  Sudden changes in light may actually help improve and strengthen the eyes as long as the differences of light are not too harsh.

Eye Drops:
They should only be used when your eyes are extra dry or you may have an infection.  If your eyes are constantly dry, be sure to blink more often.  Blinking causes the natural lubricants to wash over the eyes and keep them clean and wet.  Here is a tip about eye drops; most eye drops stop working after the expiration date and can actually cause harm to your eyes if they are continuously used.

Loud and Sudden Noises:
Noises can distract us and keep up from staying relaxed.  Things such as traffic, airplanes, trains and even neighbors yelling can affect our eyesight as well as our hearing.

By learning to relax your eyes and keep them protected, you can ensure good eyesight for a very long time.
